Chapter XVI- Massacre of Jews in Portugal

Massacre of Jews in Portugal

D. Manuel was a very religious man, he invested a good part of the country's fortune in churches and convents, as well as sending enough missionaries for the evangelization of the new colonies.

However the darkest part of his reign came about with the persecution of Jews and Muslims in Portugal to please the Catholic kings of Spain and to fulfill the clauses of his marriage contract with the heiress of Spain, Isabel de Castile, with whom he married in 1497
From this religious political attitude the 1506 Massacre of Lisbon was developed by a multitude of Portuguese Christians who persecuted, raped, tortured and killed hundreds of Jews (more than 4,000) accused of being the cause of a drought, famine and plague in the country
This event took place before the beginning of the Inquisition in Portugal and 9 years after the forced conversion of the Jews into new Christians.
This massacre lasted 3 days from April 19 to 21 in the Holy Week of 1506.
The consequences of this massacre resulted from D. Manuel in the action of penalizing those involved confiscating their property. The instigating Dominicans were sentenced to death by hanging.
D. Manuel I asks the pope in 1515 for permission to establish the Inquisition in Portugal. The Inquisition is in fact established in national territory, but not in its reign.
