As usual at the beginning of each year, D. Carlos left with all his family to Vila Viçosa, where he met for the last time with his friends and where he promoted his famous hunts.

It is at this point that the coup attempt is attempted, but this coup was thwarted by prompt action by the government
Following this revolutionary attempt on January 28, 1908, the Government drafted a decree allowing it to expel from the country or deport overseas those guilty of the crime against state security.
The King signed this decree in Vila Viçosa

On February 1, 1908, the Portuguese royal family returned to Lisbon after having spent a season in the ducal palace of Vila Viçosa.
The itinerary of the trip was: travel by train to Barreiro, and from Barreiro they caught a steamer for the Terreiro do Paço

They were expected by the government and various elements of the court
After the greetings, the royal family climbed into an open carriage toward the Palace of Necessities.

The carriage crossed the Terreiro do Paço and it was in this place that the royal family was shot, and the culprits came from the crowd, who joined to greet the king, in this attack King Carlos died immediately as the prince Luís Filipe heir to the throne who was also mortally wounded. In this attack D. Manuel II, ( the king's youngest son) he was only wounded in an arm.

The killers were identified by the royal guard and were killed on the spot, and were recognized as members of the Republican movement
The death of King Carlos was lamented by all the countries of Europe, especially in England, by King Edward VII

In fact the king died in the fulfillment of his duty and with him died the attempt to reform the monarchy

D. Carlos died at the age of 44 and his son Luís Filipe died at the age of 20, both lie in the Church of S. Vicente de Fora, in 1933 two beautiful tombs were inaugurated by the architect Raul Lino
