The instauration of the Republic

With the death of the king D. Carlos (previous chapter) the son D. Manuel rose to the throne

The political situation in the reign of D. Manuel II was degrading, having happened 7 governments in 24 months
The monarchists were divided and even fragmented, yet the Republicans continued to gain more and more force and land throughout the country

The legislative elections of August 28, 1910 increased the number of Republican deputies in the parliament, which favored the republican revolution

On October 4, 1910, the republican revolution began, and the Proclamation of the Republic took place the following day (October 5) .
The Palace of Needs (Royal Residence Palace) was bombed on October 4, 1910, and the king was advised to go to the National Palace of Mafra, where his mother (queen D. Amelia), and his grandmother (the Queen D. Maria Pia), would join the Monarch

On the following day (on the 5th) and having overcome the republican cause, D. Manuel II, D. Amélia (his mother), D. Maria Pia (grandmother) and the infant Afonso Henrique (uncle of the monarch) go to the beach of the Fishermen in Ericeira. Depart aboard 2 fishing boats for the purpose of boarding the yacht "Amélia" and depart in the direction of Porto

However republican agitation extended throughout the country, and the king was advised not to disembark in Porto, because it was not safe and could attack his life and the life of his family
For this reason it lands in Gibraltar, soon upon its arrival the royal family receives the tragic news that the city of Porto ended up joining the republican cause.
The coup d'état ends with the surrender of the monarchists leading to the victory of the republicans, the royal family of Gibraltar departs on an English ship to the United Kingdom, where they are very welcomed by King George V

D. Manuel II, at the age of 20, left Portugal, where he reigned only 2 years and never returned to Portugal in his lifetime
